Common Questions and Concerns
DO I NEED TO PRE-REGISTER?
No. Our registration takes less than 10 minutes and can be done on the day of surgery.
I ALREADY PAID THE DOCTOR WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY THE SURGERY CENTER?
Your Doctor’s practice, the Surgery Center and the Anesthesiologist are all separate businesses. Each has a different fee associated with their services.
WHY DO I HAVE TO COME TO THE SURGERY CENTER AN HOUR BEFORE MY SURGERY?
We take time to get you ready for the surgery. A nursing assessment is completed, medications may be administered and if you are above 10 years old you will likely get and intravenous fluid started.
CAN I GO BACK TO THE O.R. WITH MY CHILD?
No. Due to infection prevention reasons and for the safety of your child, you and the staff we do not allow parents to go to the O.R. for induction of anesthesia.
HOW LONG WILL I BE AT THE SURGERY CENTER?
Plan to come 1 hour before your scheduled procedure, factor in the surgery time, and add about 1 hour for recovery time. This will give you a general idea of how long you will be at the center. As many surgical procedures may take longer than planned your case may be extended or delayed depending on each person’s individual need.
WHY CAN’T MY CHILD HAVE ANYTHING TO EAT OR DRINK PRIOR TO SURGERY?
Most anesthesiologist do not allow a patient to eat or drink prior to surgery. This is for safety reasons to assure that a patients stomach is empty to avoid complications associated with the potential for stomach contents to be breathed into the lungs. On rare occasion an anesthesiologist may allow clear liquids in the morning if a case is planned for later in the day.
AFTER SURGERY A SOFT DIET IS RECOMMENDED.
We will usually have a patient drink fluid or have a popsicle as soon as they are awake. It is recommended that for some surgery a soft diet is recommended for a short period to promote healing. Fluids are always recommended following surgery. Some surgery has no diet restrictions. You will be given a discharge instruction sheet listing your diet recommendations. We recommend that you advance your diet slowly following surgery.
CAN I STAY WITH MY FAMILY MEMBER WHILE AT THE SURGERY CENTER?
Yes. We encourage family members to be with each patient in the pre-op area and in the Recovery Room as soon as the patient is aware of their surroundings. You will be given post-surgical care instructions as well.
